Brazil: Commercial and industrial sector leads battery market, but residential customers triple contracted volume

The data is part of the 2027 Strategic Energy Storage Study, published by Greener.
The Brazilian battery energy storage market accumulated 2.8 GWh of contracted capacity between 2020 and 2026. In the last year alone, the volume reached 1,227 MWh, a growth of nearly 50% compared to the 819 MWh recorded in 2025.
The data is part of the 2027 Strategic Energy Storage Study. Greener tracks the evolution of the domestic market and identifies opportunities for the expansion of this market in the country.
The figures demonstrate that the growth observed in recent years is significant. In 2024, the annual contracted volume was 312 MWh. In 2025, it increased to 819 MWh, and in 2026, it surpassed 1.2 GWh. In other words, in just two years, the annual contracted capacity nearly quadrupled.
The survey considers, for 2026, the volume already recorded and an estimate corresponding to the fourth quarter. Therefore, the result does not yet exclusively represent the contracts effectively accounted for by the end of the year.
The commercial and industrial sector leads, but microgrids and households are increasing their share.
The distribution of projects reveals a shift in the profile of Brazil’s energy storage market. Systems designed for commercial and industrial consumers connected to medium voltage continue to lead, with 511 MWh in 2026.
However, their share of the annual volume fell from 51% in 2025 to 42% in 2026, indicating the growth of other applications, particularly in the residential and microgrid segments.
In the residential segment, contracted volume increased from 78 MWh in 2025 to 219 MWh in 2026, representing a growth of over 180%. As a result, the market share rose from 9% to 18%.
Microgrids also recorded significant growth. Contracted volume increased from 45 MWh to 174 MWh, nearly quadrupling during the period. Consequently, the market share for this application rose from 5% to 14%.
Other modalities also gained ground. Remote service and off-grid projects increased from 136 MWh to 250 MWh, raising their share from 17% to 20%. Meanwhile, behind-the-meter systems advanced from 20 MWh to 72 MWh, causing their market share to increase from 2% to 6%.
According to Greener, the figures indicate that energy storage is beginning to reach a wider range of consumer profiles and applications, and is no longer exclusively concentrated in large-scale R&D projects.
Load management and backup power are key applications in the commercial and industrial sector.
Among commercial and industrial consumers connected to medium voltage, the primary use of batteries is load shifting, which involves storing energy at specific times for later use when costs or demand are higher.
According to Greener, expansion accounted for approximately 70% of the identified purpose of R&D projects, totaling 289 MWh. Backup power, used to keep equipment and operations running during supply interruptions, represented another 23%, with 97 MWh.
The other applications were demand peak reduction, aimed at decreasing maximum electricity demand, with 20 MWh (5%), and power quality improvement, with 7 MWh (2%).
The domestic market already has 103 agents.
The survey also identified 103 agents operating in Brazil’s energy storage supply chain, distributed across various stages of the market.
Of that total, 58 are manufacturers and technology providers, including companies that produce cells, battery modules, power conversion systems (PCS), and energy management systems (EMS).
The chain also includes 20 distributors, responsible for logistics, credit, and product portfolios; 14 EPC companies, which work on sizing, design, and installation; and 11 service providers and distributors, involved in the operation, maintenance, and marketing of system benefits.
In total, 21 brands with a significant market volume in Brazil in 2026 were identified, including estimates for the fourth quarter. The survey was conducted directly with 32 companies.

Frequently asked questions
How did the annual contracted battery storage volume in Brazil change between 2025 and 2026 according to Greener's study?
The annual contracted volume reached 1,227 MWh in 2026, marking a nearly 50% increase from 819 MWh in 2025. This growth contributes to a total accumulated capacity of 2.8 GWh since 2020.
What is the primary application of battery storage for commercial and industrial consumers connected to medium voltage in Brazil?
Load shifting is the primary use, involving storing energy for later use during high-cost or high-demand periods. This application dominates the sector's strategy for optimizing energy consumption and costs.
What proportion of identified R&D project purposes in Brazil's battery storage market is dedicated to grid expansion?
Expansion accounted for approximately 70% of the identified purposes, totaling 289 MWh of capacity. This indicates a strong focus on enhancing grid stability and capacity rather than just backup power.
