Brazil: C&I Leads Battery Market, But Residential Contracted Volume Triples

Brazil’s battery energy storage market is projected to reach 2.8 GWh in cumulative contracted capacity by the end of 2026. Of this total, 1,227 MWh corresponds to the volume forecast for this year alone.
This figure represents a growth of nearly 50% compared to the 819 MWh recorded in 2025, according to data from the 2027 Strategic Energy Storage Study by Greener, released this week.
The growth trajectory is also notable when compared with previous years. In 2024, the contracted volume was 312 MWh. With the 1,227 MWh projection for 2026, the market is expected to nearly quadruple its annual capacity in just two years.
Greener clarifies that the 2026 figure combines volumes already confirmed and an estimate for the fourth quarter. The 2024 and 2025 data incorporate revisions made after the original surveys were published.
C&I leads, but microgrids and residential applications expand their share
The distribution of projects highlights a shift in the profile of Brazil’s energy storage market. Systems intended for C&I (commercial and industrial) consumers connected at medium voltage continue to lead, with 511 MWh contracted in 2026.
Despite this, the segment’s share of the total volume fell from 51% in 2025 to 42% in 2026. This trend reflects the growth of other applications, particularly residential systems and microgrids.
In the residential segment, contracted volume surged from 78 MWh to 219 MWh, a growth rate exceeding 180%. Consequently, its market share doubled, rising from 9% to 18%.
Microgrids also experienced significant expansion. Volume increased from 45 MWh to 174 MWh, nearly quadrupling. The market share of this application rose from 5% to 14%.
Other segments also expanded their presence. Remote service and off-grid projects grew from 136 MWh to 250 MWh, increasing their share from 17% to 20%. Meanwhile, behind-the-meter systems advanced from 20 MWh to 72 MWh, causing their market share to rise from 2% to 6%.
According to the study, the results show that although commercial and industrial projects still account for the largest share of contracted storage, the market is beginning to diversify its applications, with significant growth in residential systems, microgrids, and solutions aimed at remote areas.
Load shifting and backup lead applications in the C&I sector
Among commercial and industrial consumers connected at medium voltage, the primary use of batteries is load shifting, which involves storing energy during specific periods for later use when costs or demand are higher.
According to Greener, this expansion accounted for approximately 70% of C&I projects with identified purposes, totaling 289 MWh. Backup, used to keep equipment and operations running during power supply interruptions, represented another 23%, with 97 MWh.
The remaining applications were peak shaving, which aims to reduce electrical demand peaks, at 20 MWh (5%), and power quality improvement, at 7 MWh (2%).
The domestic market already has 103 agents
The survey also identified 103 agents operating in Brazil’s energy storage value chain, distributed across various stages of the market.
Of this total, 58 are manufacturers and technology suppliers, including companies specializing in cells, battery modules, power conversion systems (PCS), and energy management systems (EMS).
The chain also includes 20 distributors, responsible for logistics, credit, and product portfolios; 14 EPC firms, which handle sizing, design, and installation; and 11 service providers and marketers, involved in the operation, maintenance, and marketing of system benefits.
In total, 21 brands with volume in the Brazilian market in 2026 were identified, including the estimate for the fourth quarter. To compile the survey, 32 companies were directly consulted.
